Is there another pantomime in Killorglin - The Kerryman
Few would argue with the assertion that Killorglin is a town with many ‘strings to its bow’ that range from its prowess as a sporting capital to one of vibrant community activism. But when it comes to engendering the most ancient form of theatrical entertainment and the traditions of the Italian “Cammedia dell’arte”, Killorglin Pantomime Group has stolen a march on many others.
Killorglin Panto have kept crowds laughing by the Laune since 1958 when Fr. Stack, Johnny Mangan, Liam Foley and Fr. O’Riordan first set about the task of raising funds for the CYMS in Killorglin by staging a pantomime. Little could they have envisaged back on that cold January evening in 1958 as the people sat laughing at “Snow White and the Seven Cromane Men” that those still dedicated to the popular and ever entertaining spectacle that is panto in Killorglin, would be busily preparing for rehearsals ahead of its latest production fifty-eight years on.
It is this very tradition of pantomime in Killorglin that will once again guide the group as it shortly commences its preparations ahead of its January performance of ‘Ma Dame Butterfly AKA Mrs. Aladdin’ which will mark an incredible 53rd performance for Killorglin Panto since its inception over half a century ago. But is Killorglin Panto only confined to Killorglin? Oh no it isn’t. The group also stage their performances around the county and have performed in Cork and Dublin, as well as appearing on RTE in 1965 and 2003. So you see while Killorglin Panto is constantly looking to the future in terms of its productions, it does so with one eye always resting on a proud past.
So why has Panto continued to be so successful over the years? “Well the key is the enthusiasm, energy and fun the performers bring to rehearsals and to the stage,” said Geraldine O’Sullivan of Killorglin Panto.
‘Ma Dame Butterfly AKA Mrs. Aladdin’ takes a light-hearted look at the traditional tale ‘Aladdin’ offering its own unique twist. As usual there is fast moving comedy, a lavish display of colourful costumes from Anne Mangan, lively music under the baton of Martin Hurley and Strictly Come Dancing choreography from Jackie O’Mahony. A huge chorus ensemble of over 40 singers/dancers; a show stopping scene with Killorglin’s ‘Kutest Kiddies’ and imaginative scenery from Mike Ahern make this a must see event. Finally, the role of Ma Dame Butterfly will be played by producer Extradoiniaire, Declan Mangan who is featuring in his 53rd Panto. This is a show you simply cannot afford to miss.
The show runs from Saturday January 16th and runs until January 20th. Tickets are available from the Panto booking office from Monday January 4th or by calling 066 9790961.

Killorglin Panto Group's 56th annual pantomime is the much loved 'The Wizard of Oz'
The choice for the renowned Killorglin Panto Group's 56th annual pantomime is the much loved 'The Wizard of Oz'. Since 1958 the Panto in the CYMS has been one of the highlights of the Winter Season. In recent years the reputation of the Killorglin Panto has become nation wide as the Group have performed in Dublin, Cork, Tralee ,Killarney and other Kerry towns, and several of its productions have been covered by RTE,TG4 and TV3,Virgin..
Script writer and Dame, Declan Mangan has adapted the script they last used in 1989 and features all the traditional characters from the Wizard, with Miltown teacher, Bronagh Murphy playing the lead role of Dorothy. Declan is Dame Tin Lizzie and the comics are Kevin Moriarty and Colm Clifford with the confusing names , Here and There.
The Musical Director for the last 5 years, Martin Hurley has a chorus of over 30 singing some well known Oz favourites and some modern showstoppers which are sure to impress. Jackie O Mahony,(Martin's wife) has made a name for herself as a superb choreographer and has staged some very successful Strictly come Dancing shows all over the County. This year Jackie is also directing the show and her creative stage imagination should add to the Killorglin Panto reputation.Oh yes it will!!
